One Voice Can Turn Into Thousands: Get the Bigots Off the Air

We do have the power to bring about change. WE elected the first president/leader of African decent of a westernized country! And now it’s time to STOP THE HATE. THE URBAN REVOLUTION’S purpose is to help change the way people of color are portrayed in all forms of media and thus how they are treated in every day life. A prosperous future of the United States is intrinsically tied to an equitable distribution of wealth and knowledge among ALL Americans. To this end, what we can do today – is to systematically eliminate the HATE from our airwaves. Enemy #1 Rush Limbaugh.

To strengthen our resolve, Black Kos helped remind me of what we have already accomplished.  Let’s take a look at what we were able to do with the help of organizations like:  ColorofChange, Media Matters, the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Strategies for the Limbaugh Fight – Can We Get Him Off the Air?

boycott rushMilt over at Please Cut the Crap makes a very good point about how we attempt to cut off Limbaugh at the knees.  We want to make sure when we talk to advertisers that it is NOT about conservative commentary, but more about racist, sexist, hateful remarks that spew from Limbaugh’s trap on a daily basis.  This is not a one-time phenomenon.  This is who he is and what he is doing is spreading hate.  Please Cut the Crap allows for folks to re-blog his blog and so here it is in it’s entirety.

The attempt to bring down Rush Limbaugh isn’t just about Sandra Fluke, and it’s not about one time and one victim. It most certainly is not about two words. Just as importantly, it’s not about simply shutting up someone we disagree with, as should be clear based on the fact that 90% of all talk radio on the air is right wing talk, and we’re only going after Limbaugh.

This movement will probably fail in its ultimate goal of getting Limbaugh off the air, because the economics of radio make such a thing damned near impossible. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. The airwaves belong to us, not the huge corporations who hold the licenses to use them, and it’s about damn time we started demanding at least some semblance of decent behavior.

That said, it makes me nervous when anyone, even people on our side of the fence, uses advertiser pressure to attempt to shut someone up, even someone as odious as Rush Limbaugh. We also have to be careful how we ask advertisers to withdraw their support. Keep in mind, a lot of these same advertisers also advertise on progressive radio shows, as well. That’s one reason we have to stop referring to our actions as a “boycott.”  when you threaten to stop supporting a Limbaugh advertiser, you might also technically be threatening to stop supporting a Stephanie Miller or Randi Rhodes advertiser, as well. Plus, if you’re not judicious enough to make sure the advertiser knows these actions have nothing to do with Limbaugh’s ideology, it is possible to encourage that advertiser, and many others, to withdraw support for all political talk radio, to prevent offending anyone at all.

I know a lot of progressives seem to have been programmed to think outrage is a motivator for most people, but I assure you, it’s not. We’ve had 32 years of political domination by an ideology shared by, at most, a quarter of the population. At some point, we have to figure out that what we’re doing simply isn’t working.

To do this right, you’ll have to point out that Rush Limbaugh goes way beyond just being a typical right winger and a Republican shill. You’ll have to show advertisers that what they are buying is something akin to a hatefest. To do this, you’ll need ammunition. Luckily, this blog is a helper. Here are some of Limbaugh’s most famous statements and tirades. Let advertisers know, this is what they’re supporting when the pay for ads on Limbaugh’s program.

And here’s a special challenge to those folks on both the left and right who feel the need to claim “both sides do the same.” If you can find a similar list from left-leaning talk hosts, either on radio or tv, please present them. I’d love to see them.

Here are Rush Limbaugh’s greatest hits:

On Race:

“Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?”

“The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies.”

“They’re 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?”

When Carol Moseley-Braun (D-IL) was in the U.S. Senate, the first black woman ever elected to that body, Limbaugh would play the “Movin’ On Up” theme song from TV’s Jeffersons when he mentioned her. Limbaugh sometimes still uses mock dialect — substituting “ax” for “ask”– when discussing black leaders. Source (for all four quotes above)

“Sorry to say this, I don’t think (Donovan McNabb) been that good from the get-go,” Limbaugh said. “I think what we’ve had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn’t deserve. The defense carried this team.” Source

“Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons,” Limbaugh stated. “There, I said it.” Source

“So you go into Darfur and you go into South Africa, you get rid of the white government there. You put sanctions on them. You stand behind Nelson Mandela — who was bankrolled by communists for a time, had the support of certain communist leaders. You go to Ethiopia. You do the same thing.”  Source

“You can’t criticize the little black man-child (Democratic candidate Barack Obama). You just can’t do it, ’cause it’s just not right. It’s not fair. He’s such a victim.” Source

“And don’t forget, Sherrod Brown is black. There’s a racial component here, too. And now, the newspaper that I’m reading all this from is The New York Times, and they, of course, don’t mention that.” (As we all now know, Sherrod Brown isn’t black) Source

“We are being told that we have to hope he succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles, bend over forward, backward, whichever, because his father was black, because this is the first black president.” Source

On his TV show in 1992, after Spike Lee suggested that black schoolchildren get a day off from school to see his film Malcolm X: “Spike, if you’re going to do that, let’s complete the education experience. You should tell them that they should loot the theater, and then blow it up on their way out.” Source

(After reading a report of black students assaulting a white student on a bus, in an incident that police reported was not racially motivated): “In Obama’s America, the white kids now get beat up with the black kids cheering, ‘Right on, right on, right on.'” Source

To a black caller who disagreed with him: “Take that bone out of your nose and call me back.” Source

On Women:

“Colleges have been chickified. Men aren’t showing up in as many numbers as they used to…This is what we have done to boys and men. The feminists / feminazis have been working for years to this end: advance women by diminishing men.” Source

“The definition of a misogynist is a man who hates women almost as much as women hate women. That’s what a misogynist is. Did you know that…A misogynist is a guy who hates women almost as much as women hate women.” Source

“Feminism is about victimization. Don’t forget Undeniable Truth of Life Number 24. Feminism was established to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream.” Source

“My cat comes to me when she wants to be fed. I have learned this. I accept it for what it is. Many people in my position would think my cat’s coming to me because she loves me. Well, she likes me, and she is attached, but she comes to me when she wants to be fed. And after I feed her…she’s off to wherever she wants to be in the house, until the next time she gets hungry. She’s smart enough to know she can’t feed herself. She’s actually a very smart cat. She gets loved. She gets adoration. She gets petted. She gets fed. And she doesn’t have to do anything for it, which is why I say this cat’s taught me more about women, than anything my whole life.”Source

On Fox & riends, defending his selection as a Miss America judge, 02/03/2010: “I’m a huge supporter of women. What I’m not is a supporter of liberalism. Feminism is what I oppose. Feminism has led women astray. I love the women’s movement — especially when walking behind it.” Source

“I wonder: Why is it that Anthony Weiner turns out to be the kind of guy he is? How does that happen?…What kinda women has Anthony Weiner been around his whole life?He has been around a bunch of these kinds of women who have been attacking testosterone, who have been attacking traditional male roles. He’s been around women to whom the idea of a real guy is some metrosexual. Is it any wonder, ladies and gentlemen?…Hollywood is working on four or five (it might even be six) sitcoms about how men have basically just been just beaten down to pantywaist, Milquetoast wimps — and they’re comedies. It’s in vogue to make fun of weak, worthless, wimp sissies. That’s who the men are in these upcoming shows. Now, how do these men turn out that way? Who makes them that way? ‘Cause that’s not their natural state. I mean, you look at Weiner. We cannot blame what happened to Weiner on testosterone. We’re looking at a guy here who is kiddie whipped…somebody here who’s been hanging around these kind of women — and he’s doing anything he can to break out. He’s doing everything he can to step out and get away from their control. This, to Anthony Weiner, is being a guy. He’s not allowed to be a guy hanging around a bunch of liberal women.” Source

“Female politicians get a pass on every aspect of their appearance. You would never have stories about how some female politican’s fat… There are plenty of lard-ass women in politics, and they get a total pass on it.”  Source

“I’ll tell you, you women. Why don’t you just make it official, put on some burkas and I’ll guaran-damn-tee you nobody’ll touch you. You put on a burka, and everybody’ll leave you alone if that’s what you want.” Source

Other interesting quotes:

Referred to soldiers who support the withdrawal of troops from Iraq as “phony soldiers.” Source

Discussing an ad by featuring Iraq war veteran Brian McGough: “He discusses his service in Iraq, the wounds he suffered there, and he says to me in this ad, ‘Until you have the guts to call me a ‘phony soldier’ to my face, stop telling lies about my service.’ You know, this is such a blatant use of a valiant combat veteran, lying to him about what I said, then strapping those lies to his belt, sending him out via the media in a TV ad to walk into as many people as he can walk into.” Source

On Haiti Earthquake relief: “Besides, we’ve already donated to Haiti. It’s called the U.S. income tax.”  (…)  “This will play right into Obama’s hands. He’s humanitarian, compassionate. They’ll use this to burnish their, shall we say, ‘credibility’ with the black community — in the both light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country. It’s made-to-order for them. That’s why he couldn’t wait to get out there, could not wait to get out there.” Source

On Michael J Fox advertisement of Claire McCaskill in 2008: “He is exaggerating the effects of the disease. He’s moving all around and shaking and it’s purely an act. … This is really shameless of Michael J. Fox. Either he didn’t take his medication or he’s acting.”Source

On Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal: “This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation…I’m talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You ever heard of the need to blow some steam off?”Source

KONY 2012 – Join the Fight

President Obama has sent in troop to find Kony who has been abducting boy and girls for his personal army and pleasures for more than a decade.  We must pray and make sure congress continues to fund the effort to find Kony and bring him to justice.  He uses the Word of God as a Sword to commit Satan’s work – he must be stopped by any means necessary. It is sad and amazing how the oppressed imitate the oppressors

Rush Limbaugh Isn’t the Only Sexist Racist Out There

Racist Obama cartoonI cried today – twice.  My son sent me his final draft of his mid-term paper.  He’s a sophomore in college and an aspiring writer.  His writing has improved so much since he started college (as it should).  The catch is, he goes to an HBCU.  I state that because there is a perception that the education at an HBCU is sub par.  A false perception born out of 400 years of protracted, abject, racism. So when I read his essay, I teared up.  The level of growth in 1.5 years far surpasses the growth of all 4 years of high school.

His essay topic was:  Are We a Post Racial Society?  (the fruit doesn’t far from the tree). He evaluated the treatment of our POTUS before and after the election.  He evaluated how African Americans and people of color in general are treated in the media, education system and legal system.  And he concluded with a quote from author and anti-activist Tim Wise:  ” To me, ‘post-racial’ is little more than a nonsense term devised by people (mostly white, frankly), who would simply rather not deal with the ever-present reality of racism and ongoing racial discrimination.” As I read and re-read my son’s essay – I cried.  My son is going to be a great asset to this society.  He is brilliant and moral and compassionate.  He will do great things.  But he will have to work extra hard to get there because we are NOT in a post racial society.

Which leads me to the second time that I cried today.  I went onto the Daily Kos and read a diary by Denise Oliver Velez about the above cartoon.  Her diary linked to Angry Black Lady’s blog post on the same topic.  This political satire was run in the News Tribune of Rome, GA.

It has been proven that there is a physical price to pay for people of color when they are exposed to racism.  While we live in a time in which too many whites have conveniently declared is post-racial; we know the truth.  This piece of $hit, masquerading as political satire is evidence of that.  What’s more, it was published in one of this town’s major newspapers.  Studies have also found that there were higher hostility levels in people of color who tried too hard to embrace the dominant culture.  (think Alan Keyes, Herman Caine, Clarence Thomas)  I don’t embrace this.  I reject this with every fiber of my being.  Moreover, I think we have a duty to write the News Tribune of Rome, GA and tell them that this type of satire is NOT ACCEPTABLE.  Here is there contact information.  Let’s blow out their inbox:

At Least Rush Stands by his Own Words

Rick Santorum has now back peddeled away from the “Obama is a snob” to want all kids to go to college statements.  Now he says that he “read” that the president had called for all kids to go to a 4-year college.  He didn’t read that somewhere.  His people knew exactly what the president said and Santorum is a bad liar.  Santorum thought he had a winning strategy calling the president a snob.  He gambled and he lost.  Apparently most Republicans expect their kids to go to college.  Can you imagine the media spin had Obama said that anyone who wants their kids to go to college is a snob?  All of the racists would have come out of the wood-work to opine about how African Americans (otherwise known as the N-word in their world) don’t value education and that’s why they can’t pull themselves up by the bootstraps.  Hell, they stole our bootstraps years ago.

Now our buddy Rush Limbaugh has issued an apology for the 3-day-torrent of foul language and defamation to Georgetown University Law Student Sandra Fluke – who testified in front of a Democrat-led committee.  Her testimony expressed the need for employers’ insurance coverage to cover hormonal contraception because it is used to treat other female ailments.  Rush decided that she had said that she is having so much sex that she cannot afford birth control.  Folks, you cannot make this stuff up.  Now he has apologized.  Unlike Santorum, however, he stand by his words.  He apologized for calling her a slut and a prostitute but said that he stands by the sentiment that he expressed.  Good for Rush – at least he’s a man of conviction.

Unlike Actress Patricia Heaton, who thought it would be a good idea to repeat the same sentiment as Rush.  She couldn’t withstand the firestorm – so she took down her Twitter account.  But not before the folks over at AngryBlackLady took a screen shot of her rants.   The twitter account is now back up with a feeble apology.  So much for women standing by their words.

Obama and the College Indoctrination Conspiracy – UPDATED w/ Video

Obama knows college is necessary for a strong America“President Obama wants everybody in America to go to college,” Santorum said. “What a snob!”  He continues with:  “Not all folks are gifted the same way. Some people have incredible gifts with their hands.”  Yeah, and some people are extremely gifted basket weavers, but there probably aren’t a lot of jobs out there for them.  The term, ‘good with their hands’, is a statement that triggers me because all too often teachers have told children of color, especially African American males, that they were not college material but that they were “good with their hands”.  Santorum elaborated on his issues with President Obama’s edict, that all who want to go to college should be able to afford it, by explaining that there are alterior motives to our president’s statement.  Santorum suggests that what the president is really after is to turn all of our children in to librals and he proves this by stating some obscure study which concludes that “62 percent of kids who enter college with some sort of faith commitment leave without it.”

So let’s deal with both of these issues.  First, that everyone does not need to go to college because some are “good with their hands” and secondly, that college influences folks to loose their faith.

I decided to read a few of the more recent studies that Santorum might have quoted. TPM called the Santorum campaign to get the source, but as of this publishing they had not returned the call.  The study that comes closest to supporting his theory reads:

In conclusion, the college experience—more than the education itself—seems corrosive to religious faith only among those who were at an elevated risk of such corrosion when they arrived on campus.College does not make students loose their religion

So the  study suggests that it is the freedoms of college life and the ability to do things that may not have been permitted at home by their parents that leads to young adults questioning the tenants of their faith.  Moreover, the study proposes that, regardless of whether one goes to college or not, young adults in general tend to begin questioning their faith and/or researching other faiths.

50 years ago the public education system assumed that less than 20% of its students would continue on to college.  And the high school system was designed to prepare students who were “good with their hands” by offering courses in automobile mechanics, shop, sewing, etc.  Not only have those classes disappeared from the course offerings, the jobs have disappeared too.  Technology has created a system where an emphasis on manual labor has declined drastically and it will only intensify over the next decade.  As a matter of fact Reuters suggests that our technological capabilities will increase by over 30 fold by 2020.  A society that believes it can succeed on a Obama wants to make technical training affordable and relevantminimally skilled labor force will be committing itself to 3rd world status.  Considering the following from Forbes:

Automation technology will continue to hit hardest in the areas where we have come to expect it: the manufacturing sector and low-wage, unskilled jobs of all types. Yet the reality is that by 2020 we will also see increasing penetration of automation into occupations that require significant training and college degrees. The six-figure knowledge workers who now inhabit oceans of corporate cubicles will be heavily threatened by software automation and specialized artificial intelligence applications that can perform many of the routine tasks and analyses that occupy their days.

Now consider that what we have seen over the last 2 decades will not compare to the 30x increase we will see over this decade.  We would be terribly naive to believe that college and/or technical training for most of our citizens isn’t an economic imperative

Quite the contrary, he seems to be the only one of the presidential contenders who actually cares about the future of our children and this nation.  He appears to be the only one who realizes that our children will be subjected to less than a working class living if they do not get at least specialized technical training.  Which is exactly what he stated in the State of the Union address.  The suggestion that President Obama wants everyone to get a 4-year degree is a lie.  What he did say is that he wants everyone who wants to get a 4-year degree to be able to afford to get it.

More importantly, it is Santorum’s unearned white privilege that allows him to speak about the necessity of higher education so cavalierly.  It is white privilege that allows him not to know that a black man with a 4-year degree and a clean record will not get an interview over a white male with only a high school diploma and a criminal record.  And while latent racism compels teachers to overwhelmingly tell black and brown children that they are not college material but that they are  good with their hands – Santorum is pandering to the idiotic thought process that drives poor whites to vote against their own interest so long as people of color get hurt in the process.   African Americans cannot afford to indulge in conspiracies that college is about indoctrination.  And poor whites can’t either.

Obama wants to make college more affordable

Arranged by Percentage of Growth over previous figures, High to Low:

  1. Biomedical Engineers – At least a Bachelors Degree.
  2. Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts – Bachelors Degree (many companies require graduate degrees, however in “real life”). This position will increase in importance and numbers, because IT cuts across all job fields in the 2010s. Look for it to explode with new jobs.

The Kiplinger Article Top 10 Careers to 2020
  1. Federal Government Managers– Some of these jobs already appeared in top job listings on and in 2009, but disappeared by 2010.
  2. Higher-Education Administrators – Because professionals are working longer into the lifespan, this position may not emerge as a high demand job by 2020. However, the number of career academies and vocational schools providing certificates for 2 years or less of study may increase in the US. Stimulus Funding dollars spent to expand colleges, vocational schools, and universities may create such a need. A larger amount of funding seems to be going to educational R&D, with resulting new jobs and products.
  3. Program Evaluators – Increased numbers of government programs require program evaluators and compliance officers to monitor government funding and the results achieved on the federal, state, county, and local levels. My experience is that with each change of US President, these jobs either increase or decrease for the next 4 or 8 years.
  4. Corporate Executives in Global Business Development or Global Workforces (International business). The recommended languages to know areMandarin (a Chinese language), Hindi, Bengali, Russian, Portuguese, Arabic, and Farsi. Chinese is expected, because of US financial borrowing from China and related future development, along with China’s growth in International Business. Russian was a big language to know in the 1960s-1980s, and then fell out of celebrity — More dealing with the Russian government and business sectors is expected 2010 – 2020. Many US corporations have offices and workforces in Arab nations as well.
  5. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists – Reportedly, this is the only type of Mental Health treatment that the new insurance system for America after 2012 will support. My experiences in providing treatment did not find this type to be the most effective for most patients. However, some applications of it are simpler and cheaper than all other Mental Health Treatments. My worst experience surrounding this treatment was listening to a psychologist tell a back-injured Workers Compensation client about reported back pain, “Your back does not hurt, so you have no pain.” It was a very short treatment session, with very little further conversation and the patient was angry. It was a misapplication of the treatment, but you get my point – this therapy can be minimal and ineffective in some cases.
  6. Immigration Experts – This many be an imminent increase with the focus on legalizing undocumented workers.
  7. Researchers – Government funded topics involve physics, math, biology, engineering, and computer science (CIS). This is to be expected with the advance of Medical and Bio-engineering, privatized space flight, and other fields. Major Universities and businesses across America are already advertising Research Scientist positions. High School Curricula are promoting these lines of study as well.
  8. Health-Informatics Specialists – This involves the National Medical Database as well as increasing patient activity generated by an aging American population. it takes a legion of workers to construct and maintain such a national database, and it may not come to fruition.
  9. Optometrists – An increase in the need for these professionals likely has to do with an aging population and a need for piots in thre military and privite aviation and aeronautics field.
  10. Genetic Counselors – This directly involves looking for genetically based diseases and conditions in order to repair damage, prevent or end conception, or treat patients more fully. However, there is a trend in clients’ desire for wishing to design babies according to specific genetic information. This is not yet possible in the 2010s. (yikes, not sure I like the implications of this one)
All of the above-mentioned careers requires at least a 2-year degree.  Jobs that do not require some specialized training will not pay a wage above working-class.  And for those jobs that pay well but have on the job training, e.g. sanitation worker, they get a decent wage because they are unionized.  And of course if the GOP has their way they will not be unionized and the wages for such Obama wants to make college affordablepositions will go down to the same wage that retail workers get.   Civil servant careers that still pay a middle class wage such as firefighting and law enforcement for the most part still only require a high school diploma.  However, they are union jobs and there is little chance for officer advancement without some higher education.  Once again, these jobs and their unions are under attack by the GOP.
In the end, in order for the United States’ economy to soar we need a well-educated workforce.  For the GOP to deny this fact means they are not interested in the United States success or they’re living in an alternate universe.  President Obama is absolutely correct in his stance in making college more affordable and in creating an environment that lends itself to a more skilled labor force.

Now consider this:  The March 2012 edition of the Harvard Business Review sites a study by Eric Hanushek which measures k-12 test scores to GDP growth.

He found that if one country’s scores were only 1/2 a standard deviation higher than another in 1960, its GDP grew a full percentage point faster in every subsequent year through 2000.

The article further explains that if the US had closed the education achievement gap, the 2010 GDP should have been 8-14% higher!  Not fixing our schools could lead to “the economic equivalent of a permanent national recession.”  If in 20 years 1/2 of the nations people are people of color and the education gap between whites and people of color continues, the catastrophic economic implications are clear.

In case you missed the video – here it is – you can’t make this stuff up, folks.

The Lorax, Fox News, Lou Dobbs and President Obama

Obama and the Lorax conspiracy

Folks you cannot make this stuff up.  Lou Dobbs postulates that The Lorax movie, based on the best selling book by author Dr. Seuss, is a left-wing conspiracy between President Barack Obama and his Hollywood friends.  That’s right, a book originally published 41 years ago in 1971, when President Obama was 9 years-old, is a conspiracy by our president to forward his “radical environmentalism”-esque agenda.  Wow – does the right-wing really believe half the crap they say, or are they just running their mouthes because they like the sound of their voices?

SIDENOTE:  Dr. Seuss, born Theodor Seuss Geisel, was not only a political satirist he was also an outspoken progressive.

Is the Contraceptive Debate Really About White Man’s Fear?

UPDATE: Watch this video of prominent Republican’s quotes. What is this War on Women really about?

I was watching Rachel Maddow interview Speaker Pelosi and they were discussing the crap that’s masquerading as legislation down in Virginia.  For those few people who haven’t been paying attention, I’m talking about the GOP’s attempt to move towards Why white men are banning contraceptionbanning abortion by making women take vaginal penetrating ultrasounds prior to receiving an abortion.  This is for all patients, including rape victims.  Speaker Pelosi said something interesting; she said, “what we are really talking about is contraception”.  She continued by saying (paraphrase) we’re talking about the right of husbands and wives to plan when they will start a family and when they will not.

Why would White men (after all the congressional panel on contraception last week was all male with one black male) want to take away the right for women to have control over when they do and do not have children?  Contraception has been legal for my entire lifetime.  Why now 2-3 adult generations later?  If contraception were illegal what would America look like?

Before I answer that question consider this.  The Census Bureau now estimates, that by the year 2019 – 7 short years away, the majority of Americans under the age of 18 will be people of color.  Over the last decade the number of white children under the age of 18 fell by 10% while the number of children of color grew by 36%.  Whites, as a whole, will be outnumbered by 2041.  Which should be within my lifetime.  Add to that, we have an African American as President of the United States; which will most likely be the president until 2016.  3 years away from when white children slip into the minority.

Now let’s consider a United States, where contraception is illegal.  Let’s assume for the sake of argument that most Americans will not try and get contraception from Canada, etc.      What I imagine is an America where the average family has between 5-7 babies and Why white men want to eliminate contraceptionfamilies of 10 or 11 children would be common again…among all races.  So, if today, contraception were made illegal, in 2019 white children would probably still be in the majority.  And 2041 would turn into 2141 or some other utopian date.

So, could all of the hullabaloo over contraception really be about white men finally feeling threatened by the inevitablity that they are loosing control of their majority in this country? I remember Senator John McCain in an interview with Bill O’Reilly prior to the 2008 election.  Bill O’Reilly said that we must maintain, “the White Christian male power-structure” and McCain agreed.   Could this be there way to take women back out of the workplace and put them back in the kitchen and on the birthing tables to produce more white babies?  Could this be their last ditch effort to preserve the White Christian male power structure?

Gasoline Prices Highest in 9 Months – Whose fault Is It?

Crude Oil prices are up $2.65 a barrell since last May.  Consequently, we spoiled ones here in the U.S., will experience higher prices at the pump.  The question is, whose fault is it that our gas prices are up?  Is it President Obama’s fault?  The GOP Tea Baggers and Fox News would sure like you to think that.  But let’s look at the situation more closely.

Graph provided by Consumer Energy Report and BY ROBERT RAPIER

As you see from this graph domestic oil production is the highest its been in about 7 years.  All of this production is not necessarily the result of President Obama’s policies, nor is it necessarily the result of President Bush’s policies.  It is a combination of both, plus raising crude oil prices over the past decade and the response to that.    So the Republican idea of higher domestic oil production equals lower prices at the pump is simply not true.  There are too many other factors involved.  For instance, according to a (canadian) report our current prices are a result of the economic troubles of Greece, and the highly popular, Republican supported sanctions against Iran.

Crude prices rose after European leaders agreed to lend Greece €130 billion ($172 billion Cdn) to avoid a debt default and as Iran laid out conditions for future oil exports to European countries.

Earlier in the week, Iran said it was halting sales to Britain and France in retaliation for a European Union embargo taking effect in July over Tehran’s disputed nuclear program.

Why does Iran halting sales to Britain and France affect our prices?  Because all crude oil, including the stuff pumped from our own lands and territories go on the world market for any one to bid on.  Speculators, look at what’s happening in the world, Iran in particular, and bid accordingly.  i.e. supply contracts, demand stays the same = shortage in supply.  Shortage of supplies make speculators drive the price up.  Econ 101.  Drilling more today or passing the very very dangerous Keystone pipeline will do NOTHING for gas prices today.

Additionally, in the author’s opinion, higher gas prices are at least partially the result of the financial system’s deregulation.  The deregulation that began here under conservative governing and continued across the planet as conservatives were voted in, in various developed countries caused the housing market collapse.  Greece’s issues are a delayed reaction to that collapse.  The notion that if one leaves the market alone, it will work itself out, has been proven to be a faulty argument over the last 90 years.  Mainly because that notion rests on the assumption that the stakeholders of industry’s primary purpose is for the greater good.  However, any sane person knows that stakeholders only think about short term gain for the shareholders sometimes at the expense of long term growth.  Greed, in essence, is the factor that conservatives refuse to acknowledge and consequently their denial will keep them in the loop of deregulation-at-any-cost-insanity forever.

The results of Obama’s energy policies will not be felt (for the most part) until he wins his second term, at the earliest, and some results will not be felt until after 2016.  In any case, regardless of the noise coming from Fox News, the GOP candidates, and the Tea Party, President Obama’s decisions are NOT the cause of higher gas prices at the pump today.
